Art Basel Hong Kong 2025, one of Asia’s leading contemporary art fairs, has placed a significant emphasis on artificial intelligence, with several installations and events exploring the impact of new technologies on the art world.

The fair, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in March, featured 242 galleries from 42 countries and territories, with more than half based in the Asia-Pacific region.

AI at the Forefront

A highlight of this year’s edition was the “Encounters” sector, curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, which presented 18 large-scale installations, including works by artists employing AI as a core element in their creative process.

Hong Kong-based artist Mak2 exhibited “Home Sweet Home Backyard (2025)”, an installation of AI-generated triptychs paired with an interactive video game. Visitors could influence the work’s progression and value through in-game actions. Chinese artist Lu Yang presented “DOKU the Creator (2025)”, an immersive piece featuring a digital avatar, video installations, and a pop-up store selling DOKU-themed items.

Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen’s “Night Charades”, an AI-assisted animation paying tribute to Hong Kong cinema, was projected on the facade of the M+ Museum from March 22 to June 29. The work was co-commissioned by Art Basel and M+, with UBS providing support.

Dialogue on Technology and Art

The Conversations series, curated by Stephanie Bailey, hosted panel discussions on topics such as AI’s impact on creativity and the global art market. Among these was “Art of Gaming,” which featured Lu Yang and Canadian artist Jon Rafman discussing the intersection of gaming and digital art.

Para Site, a Hong Kong non-profit arts organization, curated Art Basel’s public Film Programme for the first time, presenting a range of works exploring technology and moving image.
