Web Search Tool with Source Citations
The research tool allows Claude to carry out multi-step online searches, summarize results, and provide inline citations linking back to original sources. This function is currently being tested with users on Max, Team, and Enterprise plans in the United States, Japan, and Brazil. Access for Pro plan users is expected in the future.
According to Anthropic, the tool is designed for use cases where up-to-date information is needed, such as academic research or market analysis. The inclusion of citations is intended to support transparency, allowing users to assess the credibility of the sources used. The tool’s accuracy and usefulness will depend on its ability to select relevant and reliable content.

Google Workspace Integration
The second feature allows Claude to access Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs. It can perform tasks such as summarizing emails, identifying calendar events, or extracting key points from documents. This integration is available to all paid subscribers, but must be enabled by organization administrators.
Anthropic states that user data from Google Workspace is not used to train the model unless explicit permission is given. This approach may address growing concerns about how AI systems handle personal or workplace information.
Context and Comparison
Claude’s addition of web search and Google Workspace integration places it alongside other advanced AI assistants such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, xAI’s Grok, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Google’s Gemini.
ChatGPT and Grok have supported real-time web search with source citations for some time. Both also offer multi-step reasoning modes—ChatGPT’s “Deep Research” Mode and Grok’s “Think” Mode—which enable the assistants to plan and execute complex queries. Claude’s web search brings similar capabilities, including iterative querying and inline citations intended to improve transparency.
In terms of productivity tools, Claude now supports Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs, mirroring the Google Drive integrations available in ChatGPT and Grok. Google Gemini is natively embedded within Google’s ecosystem, while Microsoft Copilot is tightly integrated with Microsoft 365. Both Gemini and Copilot also offer real-time web access.
Ultimately, the key difference comes down to how capable the agentic AI truly is—how intelligently it can interpret tasks, how accurately and comprehensively it can search for and summarize information, and whether it can identify and retain critical details without omission. As all major players expand similar feature sets, it is this depth of reasoning, reliability, and attention to nuance that will define which AI assistant stands out.
