Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the nation’s largest bank by market value, has launched CommBiz Gen AI, a conversational artificial intelligence tool designed to support business banking customers.
Features and Development
CommBiz Gen AI provides instant, natural-language responses to queries about payments, transactions and account management on the CommBiz platform. The service, developed with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and AI research firm Anthropic, references over 80 user guides and frequently asked questions, the bank said.
CBA stated that CommBiz Gen AI was built in six weeks using AWS’s Amazon Bedrock platform and Anthropic’s Claude 3 language models. The development was supported by the bank’s new technology hub in Seattle, which opened in March to enhance collaboration with global technology partners, including AWS, Microsoft and Anthropic.
Strategic Partnerships and AI Investment
The launch builds on a decade-long partnership between CBA and AWS. In February 2025, the bank extended its AWS agreement for five years to strengthen its cloud and AI infrastructure. Up to 200 CBA engineers are expected to rotate annually through the Seattle hub to work on AI initiatives with AWS, Anthropic, Microsoft and H2O.ai.
CBA’s Chief Technology Officer Rodrigo Castillo said the bank aims to use AI to deliver faster, safer and more personalised services to customers.
Banking Industry Trends
Australian banks have increased investment in automation and artificial intelligence to boost efficiency and improve customer experience. CBA reported deploying more than 2,000 AI models for fraud detection and customer service since 2024. The CommBiz Gen AI tool runs on CBA’s DevOps Hosting and Group Generative AI platforms, using AWS EC2 P5 instances with Nvidia H100 GPUs.
Challenges and Workforce Impact
The launch comes amid job reductions across the banking sector. CBA has cut nearly 800 positions over the past 12 months, including technology and Bankwest roles. While AI is expected to streamline operations, the bank said complex or sensitive cases will continue to require human assistance.
CBA and other banks face ongoing scrutiny regarding data privacy, with recent customer concerns over Know Your Customer (KYC) policies. CBA said its AI tools comply with privacy and security requirements.
