Chinese researchers have unveiled a new artificial intelligence tool, the FengShun-CSM, that significantly extends the reach of global weather forecasting. Capable of predicting key climate conditions up to 60 days in advance, this model promises valuable insights for disaster preparedness and agricultural planning.
What Is the FengShun-CSM?
FengShun-CSM is an AI-driven climate model jointly developed by the Shanghai Academy of Artificial Intelligence for Science and Fudan University. Unlike traditional forecasting methods that rely on complex physical equations, FengShun-CSM applies machine learning to vast amounts of historical and real-time weather data. This approach enables it to predict variables such as rainfall and land surface conditions with improved efficiency and speed.
Advancing Rainfall and Land Forecasting
Initial research indicates that FengShun-CSM provides enhanced accuracy for medium-range rainfall and land surface forecasts, including soil moisture and temperature. These improvements are particularly valuable for agriculture, enabling farmers to make better-informed decisions on planting, irrigation, and crop selection. The model has demonstrated strength in forecasting persistent weather patterns, although researchers note that further development is needed to improve predictions of rare and extreme events such as typhoons or sudden droughts.

By delivering forecasts up to two months in advance, FengShun-CSM offers government agencies and local communities additional time to prepare for potential hazards, including floods, heatwaves, and other climate-related disasters. Early warnings can be critical for organizing evacuations, pre-positioning relief supplies, and minimizing the impact on lives and property.
